Meet the five dogs running to become the Seaport’s first-ever dog mayor in Boston

The Seaport is electing a new politician into office — one with four legs and a tail.

The Boston neighborhood will appoint its first ever dog mayor next month as part of an initiative called “Bark the Vote 2024,” according to a statement. The initiative was organized as part of a community development project by WS Development, a Massachusetts real estate developer.

Campaigning in the “Pooch Primaries” race are five fluffy candidates trying their luck in local paw-litics.

“From running free at Sea Green Dog Park to sniffing out the best treats at Polkadog Bakery, dogs are woven into the fabric of Seaport life—and now it’s time to give them a voice (or, at least, a woof),” the neighborhood said in a statement.

Nominated from a pool of 175 dogs, five pooches are in the final running for the election, their website says. Voters can head to the polls from Oct. 15 to Oct. 30 to vote for the most fetching candidate — Lady, Macie, Rhubarb, Aspen or Bennett.

The winner will be announced on Nov. 1. and the elected furry friend will be inaugurated at the “InDOGuration” in March 2025 where they will reveal the dog mayor’s official portrait and the ceremonial mayor’s house “Barksworth Manor,” their website says.

The elected dog mayor will be gifted a variety of prizes, including complimentary animal shampoo every 12 weeks throughout their term, two free doggie dessert cups from Ben & Jerry’s per month and complimentary “pooch-ini” treats from Shake Shack, according to their website.

Leading up to the “Pooch Primaries,” locals can meet the candidates at meet and greets outside of Polkadog Seaport on the boardwalk, according to a statement. Guests stopped by to meet Lady and Macie on Oct. 8, and Rhubarb, Aspen and Bennett will be campaigning in store on Oct. 11.

She’s a proud Pisces, has the local doggo scene covered and is “dedicated to making sure every dog and human in Seaport has the same pawsitive experience she’s had,” her profile says.

One of Macie’s “cutest quirks” is that she loves to carry her own leash in her mouth and “talk” to people she meets, her profile shares. She is “goofy, playful, and brings sunshine wherever she goes,” which makes her the “perfect candidate to be the dog mayor,” her profile says.

Meet Rhubarb

Rhu is “ready to lead Seaport’s pups into a bright future” and knows how to “turn a tail-wagging underdog story into a victory lap,” her profile says.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
