“I can literally not walk past a dog without asking to pet it. It’s something that brings me so much joy.”
—Kristen Pechacek, CEO, MassageLuxe
In her monthly “Grab Bag” column, Editor in Chief Laura Michaels asks the tough questions—What superhero power would you most like to have? What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?—to show a side of franchising execs you don’t normally see.
Who would play you in the biopic about your life?
Reese Witherspoon because she’s authentic and very relatable but also has moments of seriousness. And she’s driven. In almost all of her roles, she is who she is but she’s driven. Plus, ‘Sweet Home Alabama,’ I live on a farm but also work in corporate America so there’s a natural tie there.
What’s something not many people know about you?
I used to play hockey and was actually rather good at it. At one point I played for team Wisconsin and almost went on to collegiate hockey but ended up getting hurt at the end of my junior year. Because I’m short and kinda tiny, people don’t think I’d play a rough ‘em, tough ‘em sport but I did and it was a huge part of my life. I was actually made captain of my team freshman year, which put me in an early leadership role that was difficult because there were seniors who obviously thought the captain job would be theirs.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Being late. I do not like being late and I do not like waiting on other people. If you’re on time, you’re late. I calendar-out everything, even my work time. If I have a project I want to work on, I’m blocking that out on my calendar to make sure I have dedicated time.
What’s something you would seriously stockpile if you found out it wasn’t going to be sold anymore?
Carbonated waters. I don’t really care what the brand is, La Croix or Bubly or whatever. I pretty much always have some sort of carbonated water next to me because I need to drink a lot of water and it needs to have a little bit of pizzazz to it, a little bit of flavor. Every time I go to the store, even if I don’t need them, I pick some up. I love variety and spontaneity and I don’t want to have the same thing all the time.
What’s one trend you wish would disappear?
Right now, I’m having a hard time because all the cool kids, my daughter included, are going back to flared jeans or baggy jeans, and my millennial mindset just wants to stay with the skinny jeans.
If you could be a member of any TV show family, which would it be?
‘Boy Meets World.’ My girls are watching it right now and it’s such a great family with really good lessons and it appeals to all ages. You can be in your 40s watching it or you can be 7 watching it and you’re going to pull away the parts that are designed for you. It’s a classic.
Which time period in history would you want to visit?
The ‘80s. I love the hair bands, so the music is a primary reason. So fun to have the big hair, the individuality that was expressed. And also, as much as I love technology, it was before the technology boom, so how interesting would it be to go back and see that life again at an older age.
What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Laundry. It’s not even so much doing it; it’s putting it away. My girls are 11 and 6, so their clothes look kind of the same size and it’s just a constant chore to separate and put it all away.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
It’s not really guilty, but I can literally not walk past a dog without asking to pet it. It’s something that brings me so much joy. Any pet snuggles or furry animals. I have a German shepherd and a beagle, and I should have enough self-control to not pet a dog, but I just don’t.
