Chaos unfolded outside a popular shopping centre when a huge group got into a fight over queueing spots for limited edition handbags, leading to a woman’s hair being brutally ripped out.
More than 150 people queued up in an attempt to get their hands on 300 limited edition branded bags in central Thailand, but a brawl erupted that prompted a hurried police intervention.
Large groups of hopeful shoppers were sat in walkways waiting for their opportunity to buy the bags, with some even lying down on the pavement and on the grass outside Central Westgate Shopping Centre in the Bang Yai district.
Two huge clumps of hair presumed to belong to women involved in the fight were found on the floor after a fight including, men, women and older people.
Security and police informed crowds that the bag sale was cancelled by the shop. Several vehicles arrived to pick up those waiting to buy the bags.
Suphiratpong Phongsaksri, a 27-year-old queueing agent hired for the event, explained that he and his friends were paid to secure spots for the purchase of the in-demand limited edition bags. He said his clients may have wanted to sell them on for profit.
Each buyer was allowed to purchase two bags only, and with 150 queuing spots available, competition was fierce as the sales opened at 10am.
Agents were promised 800 baht (£18) if they could purchase two bags, 700 baht (£16) for one, and 400 baht (£9) if they were unsuccessful. Phongsaksri saw the fight firsthand, and said security struggled against the dozens of people involved.
The crowd dispersed before police arrived and no formal complaints or formal injuries were reported. The brand’s social media page announced an indefinite suspension of sales on March 22 for safety purposes.
Earlier this week, another chaotic scene took place at a shoping centre when a major incident was declared in a Dublin shopping centre as blood was seen on the ground. A man had been stabbed on nearby Henry Street and made his way into the shopping centre.
A number of Gardai and paramedics rushed to the scene at the Ilac Centre shortly after and sealed off the area where the incident happened. One man was taken from the scene via an ambulance. His injuries were said to be serious but not life threatening.
A witness said there was “blood everywhere” and peple were seen fleeing from the scene and spilling out onto the street. The shopping centre was reopened soon after.
Police investigations are still ongoing.
