Mars has introduced a suite of artificial intelligence-powered digital tools aimed at helping pet owners monitor their pets’ health, starting with a new smartphone-based dental check for dogs. The launch is part of Mars’ $1 billion investment in digital innovation within its Pet Nutrition segment.
The first tool in the portfolio, GREENIES Canine Dental Check, is now available in the U.S. It uses AI trained on more than 53,000 images to analyze photos of dogs’ teeth and gums, helping detect signs of tartar buildup and gum irritation. Users receive results in seconds, along with follow-up recommendations. The tool also connects users to licensed veterinary technicians through the PETconnect by GREENIES service.
“With 80% of dogs suffering from gum disease, early detection is key,” noted the company. “GREENIES Canine Dental Check bridges this gap, making it easy to monitor dental health at home.”
Ikdeep Singh, global president of Mars Pet Nutrition, added: “For 90 years and counting, Mars has been making pet parenting better and now we’re making it easier than ever to monitor and support their pet’s health. GREENIES Canine Dental Check is just the beginning.”
Mars plans to expand its AI health tools throughout 2025, including a forthcoming app called IAMS Poopscan, which will analyze stool consistency to provide insights into digestive health.
This digital health rollout spans Mars’ broader pet care business, which includes brands such as PEDIGREE, ROYAL CANIN, WHISKAS, and veterinary providers AniCura, BANFIELD, BLUEPEARL, Linnaeus, and VCA.
According to Petfood Industry’s Top Pet Food companies, Mars Petcare is a division of Mars, Inc. that focuses on providing veterinary care, nutrition, and other services for pets. It is a global company with over 100,000 associates in more than 130 countries.
