MARLIN, Texas (KWTX) – Animal advocates in Marlin walked out of Tuesday’s council meeting disappointed and frustrated.
They say they were anxious to hear the findings of the city’s internal investigation into its animal shelter.
Deplorable conditions left at least two dogs dead.
The council decided to take no action regarding the city’s internal investigation and what it will do next.
The Justice for Marlin dogs group showed up to the meeting waiting to hear what action the city will take following the investigation and immediately started shaking their heads once they heard there would be no action.
The council went into executive session for over an hour to discuss the findings, then they were supposed to tell the public what’s next.
Animal advocate, Valerie Mann said they were hoping someone would be held accountable.
“We were hoping that the investigator wasn’t on the city’s side because they were hired by the city. In reality, this is really about the criminal investigation. So, the internal investigation would have been nice for something to happen. But we’re waiting for the internal investigation for the Texas Rangers to do their job,” said Mann.
Justice for Marlin Dogs group member, Dorothy Sanders said she spoke with the city investigator, Ron Davis.
She stated he shared a list with her of people he interviewed, three people from the city, and three from the animal advocate group.
However, Sanders explained the people he interviewed from the animal group were not at the animal shelter when this all started, which leaves her to believe the investigation wasn’t solid from the start.
“I feel like it’s part of the cover up. It makes me question. I know what evidence was provided, I sat down with the city investigator myself. Three people that they selected from the Justice for Marlin Dogs animal group weren’t not even people at the shelter on January 9th or 10th. So right there, the selection of who they decided to interview—right from the get-go it was a red flag that it was not going to go the right way,” said Sanders.
Animal advocates said, “the city is paying to investigate itself”, which is why they’re more hopeful with the Texas Rangers’ investigation.
No word on how far the Texas Rangers are in the investigation or when it will wrap up.
