After his bacon had gone missing from the counter, a dog owner asked Reddit users to guess which of his pups was the culprit. The post immediately went viral, and almost 500 users have joined the discussion in the comments.
The viral post shared on Sunday under the username u/Cuttlery features a picture of the dogs—a Samoyed, a Newfoundland, and a Great Pyrenees—all sneering as they lie on the kitchen floor, pretending that nothing happened.
“Someone stole 8 slices of bacon off the counter. Any guesses who?” the poster, Chad Mostom, asks in the caption.
Mostom told Newsweek that he’s sure this was a group effort, because they all smelled of bacon when he got back.
“The Newfie is a professional counter surfer so he likely procured the bacon, and the other two joined in the spoils after getting it off the counter,” he said.

While getting ready to make some bacon, the poster quickly left the room for just a couple of minutes to brush his teeth, but when he got back, all the bacon he had left on the counter was gone, and the pups looked suspiciously happy.
“I assume Short Round, our Newfie, took it off the counter and shared with the other two. He’s been caught counter-surfing repeatedly. All of them had bacon breath,” he added.
The Best Friends Animal Society explains that dogs love counter-surfing because finding food or even getting to lick any spillage from your cooking is a rewarding experience for them, and so they are likely to keep repeating it. But you can easily discourage this erratic behavior.
It’s important to teach your dog the cue “leave it,” which can be useful in many occasions besides food theft. You can do so by hiding a treat in your fist and allowing your dog to sniff it. Then tell them to “leave it,” and reward them with the treat from your other hand.
Once they learn this, you can move on to throwing a treat on the floor and again telling them to “leave it,” then rewarding them with an even tastier treat. This will teach your pup that “leave it” doesn’t mean they won’t get anything; on the contrary, it will get them even greater rewards.
Setting boundaries with your dog when it comes to human food benefits them more than it benefits you. That’s because some of the foods that we eat without issues can be dangerous and even fatal for dogs.
These foods include chocolate, grapes (raisins and sultanas, too), onions (also garlic, leeks, and chives), xylitol, avocado, macadamia nuts, and bread dough. Caffeine and alcohol are also very dangerous for their health.
You can read a veterinarian-approved list of human foods you can share with your dog here. However, it is always best to consult your own veterinarian before feeding your pup anything that isn’t specifically formulated for their consumption.
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 13,000 upvotes and 475 comments on the platform.
