A man who had more than three dozen dogs in poor living conditions in Delaware County will spend time in jail after being found guilty of multiple crimes.
The 43-year-old man was found guilty in Delaware County Municipal Court of 26 counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals and four counts of failing to register a dog kennel.
Delaware County Municipal Court Judge Marianne Hemmeter ordered the man on Thursday to serve 55 days in jail with some credit for time already served and pay a $200 fine and all court costs, which total more than $2,000.
Authorities removed 40 dogs in April from the man’s property on Kilbourne Road in Sunbury after complaints the Delaware County Sheriff’s office and dog warden received complaints about the conditions there.
All of the dogs were pit bulls or pit bull mixes. The dogs were declared abandoned several weeks after being seized when the owner missed a court date.
County Dog Warden Mitchell Garrett told The Dispatch that many of the dogs were living outside in muddy and wet conditions, and most were underweight. The dogs only had plastic barrels for shelter.
The county had been receiving complaints about the man’s property since 2020, Garrett said in April, but could not do anything until witnesses were willing to file statements.
