PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. (WKRC) – A man was sentenced for multiple animal-related crimes after police found over 100 malnourished pit bulls tied to posts and trees in his backyard.
According to a press release from the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, authorities received multiple tips and eventually search warrants for 57-year-old Vincent Lemark Burrell due to claims that he was mistreating animals, specifically pit bulls, and training them for dogfighting.
When officers arrived to Burrell’s home, they found “106 dogs, mostly pit bulls, in various degrees of existence,” the release said.
“Some dogs were emaciated, while others were strong and extremely aggressive toward other dogs,” the department said. “The sad part is the vast majority of these animals just craved the love and attention of the Deputies and Detectives that were on the scene.”
Police found the dogs tied to trees, posts, and metal stobs and noted that they were not being properly fed or hydrated. They found additional animals in the basement, where the scent of excrement was so extreme that they had to wear protective gear.
“Conditions where dogs were being housed, both inside and on the exterior of this property, were not fit for humans, much less dogs,” the release said.
Burrell was arrested on Nov. 8, 2022 on charges of cruelty to animals and dog fighting. On Thursday, Jan. 30, he was sentenced to 475 years in prison.
