Man kept 50 dogs at north St. Louis home, animal abuse charges say

ST. LOUIS — Prosecutors charged a 69-year-old man Tuesday with animal abuse after police said he housed and abused dozens of dogs at a home in the city’s Baden neighborhood.

David Sanders, of the 8700 block of Riverview Boulevard, was charged with animal abuse and unlawful use of a weapon after police said they rescued more than 20 dogs and multiple guns from his home during a recent search.

Charges say animal control officers had repeatedly shown up at the home after neighbors reported dogs living in unsanitary conditions and being struck by a man with a bat and a belt.

One animal control officer reported 50 dogs living at the home at once, and witnesses said they watched a man dump dead dogs into nearby dumpsters.

On some occasions, the man living at the home also threatened animal control officers with weapons, charges say.
