Man gets paint out to do some DIY—Dog seizes his opportunity

A homeowner working on DIY painting updates learned his furry companion lent a helping paw but not in the way one would have hoped.

TikTok user @peekosicher took viewers through the project he was working on in a June 10 video. He was painting and touching up areas around the home, as professional painters suggest homeowners should touch up spots every five to 10 years depending on the traffic area of the house. What should’ve been a relatively easy project was ruined by one of his dogs, which saw the opportunity and went for it.

The owner left an open paint bucket outside next to the room and door he was painting. Going back and forth to grab more paint, he figured nothing could go wrong. However, his dog Ted decided to show the paint bucket who was boss.

Ted marked his territory and peed right into the bucket of paint, quickly making the owner realize the painting should’ve been done when his dog wasn’t home or at least with the bucket lid on.

The dog’s bathroom break popped against the white paint. While some might have thrown away the paint, this owner didn’t let the setback stop him from completing the home project.

“Skim it off the top and crack on with the job,” he told Newsweek via TikTok when asked what he did with the paint.

In a follow-up video, the owner showed viewers where Ted could have gone instead, and his bathroom options were endless. The backyard had an open grass area, wrapping around the side of the home. Plus, there were gravel areas where Ted could have relieved himself, but the bucket was new and exciting. He was just marking his territory.

Dog owners have likely experienced the frustration of their canine peeing on almost every other tree while on walks. So what is with the marking?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) explained that while marking used to be seen as territorial behavior, it is now believed domestic dogs do it for communication. This makes sense when they’re out in the neighborhood, alerting other dogs about themselves, but they also might do it inside or in this case, in an unknown object in the backyard.

Dogs will mark their surroundings in the house because it alters the smell, making them feel more comfortable with the familiarity. It could also be a sign of stress or anxiety.

Viewer Reactions

The hilarious TikTok video reached 81,000 views, 6,018 likes and 90 comments as of Tuesday.

“It’s magnolia now,” joked a viewer.

Another commented: “I mean if it’s just touching up, there is half a side that’s not touched,” while a third suggested: “Scoop the pissy bits out and hope for the best.”

Others want this owner to put the dog to work: “If you can piss you can paint.”
