WASHINGTONVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) — The State Fire Marshal was called to investigate the cause of a fire that destroyed a home on Monday afternoon.
A father and his adult son lived in the home on W. Main Street that caught fire, but only the son was home at the time. He escaped the home, as well as four dogs and a litter of puppies.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Neighbors reported hearing popping sounds when the fire started.
“It was every couple of seconds, you could hear gunshots. It sounded like gunshots, like somebody shooting a gun,” said Tasha Yarwood, who lives a few houses down from where the fire happened.
“I heard a noise and I thought it was my dryer, and I started to smell something, and I thought my dryer was burning,” said neighbor Cristina Crispen.
Green Township Fire Chief Todd Baird said the sound came from ammunition in some boxes that exploded.
“It wasn’t going off initially but then later on, it was going off. It just explodes like a firecracker,” he said.
No one was injured, however.
“Someone was upstairs sleeping and somehow got alerted, vacated the house, and then somebody called us,” Baird said.
The fire also damaged the unit where Crispen lives next door.
“I stepped out on my porch and… flames were coming out of this window right here and just shooting out,” Crispen said.
The Green Township, Beaver Township, Salem, Columbiana and Leetonia fire departments responded to the fire.
