LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A man and a juvenile girl were hospitalized Monday after being bitten “several times” by two dogs in Louisville’s Algonquin neighborhood.
Officers responded to the 1700 block of West Lee Street around 7 p.m. to assist EMS, Aaron Ellis, a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department, said in a statement.
Once on scene, police were told an adult man was in the backyard and a juvenile girl, believed to be 8 years old, was inside the home. “Both had been bitten several times by at least two dogs,” Ellis said.
The dogs were still on scene when police arrived. Fearing for the safety of the victims, an officer shot and killed one of the dogs, Ellis said. The other dog ran off and was found nearby by an officer, who put it down.
EMS was able to get to the victims from the scene safely. The man was transported to UofL Hospital with “serious to critical” injuries, Ellis said.
The girl was alert and conscious when she was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital in downtown Louisville. Ellis said her injuries are serious, but are not expected to be life-threatening.
The owner of the dogs has been located, Ellis said. It is unknown what breed or breeds the dogs were.
Louisville Metro Animal Services will lead the investigation.
