A man has been arrested and is facing a charge of negligent homicide in a dog attack that killed a woman in New Orleans East this week. Chad Bridges was booked Friday into the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office in connection with the investigation. On March 20, the New Orleans Police Department responded to a home in the 10200 block of Brookfield Drive.When officers arrived, they found Barbara Stewart, 81, with multiple injuries from a dog attack. Stewart was taken to an area hospital, where she later died. Court records show that this was not the first time Bridges’ dogs were involved in an attack incident. Another neighbor reported to police that Bridge’s dog, a pitbull named Sadie, was able to escape Bridges’ fence and attack her 15-year-old daughter in October of 2024. The neighbor said the dog bit her daughter on the ankle, but she was able to escape to a trampoline. The court record states that the neighbor reinforced their side of the fence, but that no evidence was available showing that Bridges fixed his side of the fence. According to the court record, a piece of Bridges’ fence was broken where his yard connected to Stewart’s yard. The officer who responded to the scene reported that a piece of plywood was placed on Stewart’s side of the fence that could easily be moved from left to right. The court record states that the dogs entered the yard through the broken piece of fence blocked by the movable piece of plywood. According to the officer, the same dog that attacked the 15-year-old in 2024 attacked Stewart. One dog was surrendered to the Louisiana SPCA with the owner’s request that the dog be euthanized, and an agreement to euthanize was signed. The other two dogs were taken for a mandatory 10-day bite quarantine hold and the owner was issued citations on two counts of a dangerous dog and two counts of dogs to be confined. There is a court date set for early April for a judge to decide if these are the proper charges, a fine amount, and any additional charges that will be pursued in relation to the two dogs. Bridges is due in court Friday at 3 p.m. for his initial hearing.
