Man arrested for animal cruelty after deputies find five emaciated dogs on property

A man has been arrested in connection to an animal cruelty case involving five dogs improperly housed on a property in Charleston County, according to the Charleston County Sheriffs Office.

Harry Brown Jr. was identified as the owner of the dogs which were reportedly living in poor conditions and were emaciated.

Deputies responded to the residence located on Royal Harbor Road in reference to a call of animals needing to be removed from the property on June 6.

They made contact with the complainant who stated that the owner of the dogs, now identified as Brown, no longer lives at the residence and has not been taking care of the dogs in the back yard.

The report states that deputies found five dogs in the backyard in various states of distress.

One dog was reportedly tethered to a tree and the other four were in chain link kennels.

They each suffered from various injuries including fly strike and facial damage, and they were all deemed to be underweight and emaciated with no ready access to food or potable water.

While on scene deputies reportedly spoke via phone with Brown’s wife, who stated that her husband is the owner of the dogs and that the two are separated. She reported that she moved out of the home late last year and she knew that Brown also left the residence shortly after she moved out.

According to the report, she said that he had not been taking adequate care of the dogs for the past several months.

The report also states that over the past few years, deputies have had several run-ins with Brown in reference to his dogs, and they were able to identify him as the owner.

Due to the poor living conditions and the poor body condition of all of the dogs, a seizure order was issued.

The dogs were removed from the property and transported to Charleston Animal Society for treatment.
