Deputies began investigating on the first day of the month after the county animal control got a complaint of a person with more than 60 “husky-type” dogs that were roaming the area of Banner Quaker Hill Road and Headwaters Road.
Officers spoke with the man on October 2, where he said he was operating an animal rescue and that 47 dogs were his and 14 were from another rescue.
Animal control officers found several violations and gave him 24 hours to come into compliance.

The following day, one animal was seized due to “inadequate care and apparent illness.” This dog died several days later, the sheriff’s office said.
The agency said that on October 6, it learned that the man was in a crash in another county during which several animals were hurt and one was killed.
After getting a search warrant, animal control officers seized 33 adult dogs, two of which needed emergency veterinary care, including for a broken leg that may have happened during the crash.
The sheriff’s office said that many of the dogs are available for adoption through Sammie’s Friends at 530-471-5041. The organization is also accepting donations to help with the care and medical treatment of the dogs.
