Man arrested 2 years after dog in northern Colorado is killed in attack

LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – After more than two years on the run, a man accused of killing a dog in cold blood was captured more than 1,000 miles away from Colorado.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) says that suspect, identified as 47-year-old David Thompson, has been extradited back to the state to face justice.

On Aug. 29, 2022, a man broke into a backyard in Wellington and brutally attacked two dogs. One of the dogs did not survive.

At the time, deputies only had a vague description and a surveillance still showing the man walking away.

“A community tip led investigators to identify the suspect [as Thompson],” the sheriff’s office said in an update over the weekend. “Thompson had no prior connection to the home, residents, or animals.”

Further investigation revealed the suspect had ties to Arkansas, and deputies tracked him down.

“After an extensive investigation, which included analyzing forensic and digital evidence and traveling to Arkansas to interview the suspect, LCSO obtained a warrant for Thompson. In late November 2024, he was arrested in Arkansas and extradited to Larimer County on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty,” the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office thanked the Van Bruen, Arkansas, sheriff’s office and North Little Rock Police Department for their help in the case.

“This was a disturbing case that robbed a family of their beloved pet. Our team put considerable effort into identifying the person responsible and building a strong, evidence-based case. While it can’t reverse the loss, I hope this arrest brings some measure of comfort,” said Capt. Bobby Moll, lead of the LCSO Investigations Division.

The surviving dog in the attack did recover from their injuries, the sheriff’s office added.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
