Man Accused Of Stealing Over $6K Worth Of Handbags: Greenwich Police

GREENWICH, CT — A 55-year-old New York City man is accused of stealing over $6,000 worth of handbags from a Greenwich Avenue business, according to the Greenwich Police Department.

Melvin Hines was arrested last Friday and charged with organized retail theft less than $10,000; first-degree criminal mischief; third-degree larceny; conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny; and use of drug paraphernalia, his arrest report notes.

On Feb. 21 around 3:30 p.m., plainclothes officers working in the central Greenwich business district were notified about a shoplifting incident, police said.

Patrol officers and plainclothes officers were able to detain and identify a man as Hines, police said.

“The investigation revealed that the arrestee shoplifted three handbags valued at $6,670 from a local retailer,” police said. The address associated with the incident is linked to Saks Fifth Avenue.

Officers also found Hines in possession of “suspected drug paraphernalia,” police said.

Hines was unable to post a $100,000 bond and he was remanded to GPD custody. He’s scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on March 7.
