Police in Webster charged a man on Monday for trafficking methamphetamine after he was arrested while breaking into a Webster animal shelter to get his dogs back.Just before 4 p.m. Monday, the Webster Police Department was called to the Webster Animal Shelter by a Webster Police Animal Control officer after the officer reported a man had broken into the shelter and was attempting to take his dogs.Police arriving at the scene found the man, later identified as 25-year-old Taj Wood, of Webster, attempting to flee the scene in his vehicle.Wood was then detained by police after they said he became “uncooperative,” and they began an investigation.Police said they learned two of Wood’s dogs were in the care and custody of the animal control officer, as she had opened an animal neglect investigation several weeks earlier.The officer said she had attempted to make arrangements with Wood to transfer custody back to him after he provided proper documentation, which he failed to do.She said Wood then showed up at the animal shelter and blocked her vehicle in, before he entered the gated area of the animal shelter, unlocked the exterior kennel hatches and removed both dogs.Police said they attempted to speak with Wood again, but he continued to refuse to cooperate with them, so they took him into custody and towed his vehicle.While conducting an inventory of his vehicle, police said they located a sandwich bag containing 126.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine pills.Police said the pills appeared to be hand-pressed and were confirmed to be methamphetamine through a special narcotics analyzer machine.Wood is currently on an electronic GPS ankle monitoring device after being arrested by the Worcester Police Department in October for an armed home invasion and armed assault.Police said Wood also has been arrested for violent firearm offenses in the past, including possession of a large-capacity firearm and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a home.Woods is now charged with tracking methamphetamine, larceny, animal cruelty, breaking and entering and trespassing.He was held on $50,000 cash bail and will be arraigned at the Dudley District Court on Tuesday.
