Mainers: Simple Strategies to Keep Your Anxious Dog Calm This Halloween

Halloween can be a fun time for people, but it can be a bit overwhelming for anxious dogs, (trust me I’ve got a golden doodle and his middle name is anxiety). I figured it could help other anxious dog parents out there if I put together some tips to help your pup feel more at ease when trick-or-treaters hit the block.

According to khpet.com, First, create a safe space for your dog. Designate a quiet room away from the doorbell and the spooky sounds outside. Fill it with their favorite blankets, toys, and perhaps some calming music to drown out the noise.

Consider keeping your dog occupied with treats or interactive toys. A stuffed Kong or puzzle toy can be a great distraction and help reduce anxiety. You might also want to try some calming sprays or natural remedies designed for dogs, but check with your vet first.

I’ve also used ThunderShirt’s before which are basically weighted t-shirts that have the same effect weighted blankets have on humans. I find it helps my doodle and you can grab them at the Pet Smart in Scarborough. If your pup responds well to the shirt, it can actually provide a sense of security while kids are knocking on your door all night.

Lastly, from my own experiences, I wouldn’t recommend just giving up and taking the pup with you and your family to trick-or-treat. The different wild costumes, strangers, and loud noises can be super overstimulating. Good luck friends! I know my Maverick needs the luck every year.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
