MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission is keeping its promise to take in any stray, no matter how full. But that’s not easy – especially right now.
What they’re saying
After receiving more than 100 dogs over the past few days, MADACC said it’s over capacity.
“We’ve just been inundated,” said Kate Hartlund, MADACC community engagement and volunteer coordinator. “It’s everything: all ages, all breeds, all sizes, all temperaments, all fur coats. There’s a lot.”

Hartlund gave FOX6 News a walk-through on Tuesday as anxious barks were heard coming from every single kennel in the shelter’s seven dog rooms. Some are even split in half to accommodate more pups.
“We are a holding facility, so if it’s a stray or lost animal,” she said. “We are not a private shelter. We don’t have closed admission. We don’t get to say, ‘no’ – we have to make room.”

Hartlund said some dogs are part of animal cruelty cases and are sitting until a decision is made in court.
“We are not going to euthanize for time or space,” said Hartlund. “We’re just going to figure out a way to make it work.”

What you can do
MADACC is pushing to social media its need for volunteers, adoptions, fostering and programs to get the dogs a proper home.
“They haven’t gotten a break; it’s been nonstop,” Hartlund said. “It just keeps getting busier.”
