Lucky dog rescued from tree overhanging the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal Sunday

A small dog is recovering at the Brandywine Valley SPCA after it was rescued from a tree on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal Sunday.

That morning, on the western banks of the canal near the Canal Corkran development in Rehoboth, some boaters spotted the little mixed-breed dog about 10 feet up a tree hanging over the water, Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company Assistant Chief Ryan Peters said in a Facebook post. When they passed by the area again around 11:30 a.m. and the dog was still there, they called 911, Peters said.

Peters volunteered to help and waded through the water and marsh to the “small, scared tan dog perched precariously on a knot in the tree, leaning far enough over to allow it to climb up but not down,” the post said.

Using a ladder, he climbed up, wrapped the dog in a blanket and passed it off to a colleague. The dog “promptly started napping,” the post said.

“It (appeared) to have been out for a while with a bald spot on its ribcage that would have been against the tree,” Peters said.

The dog had no collar or microchip and was taken to the Brandywine Valley SPCA in Georgetown.

On Monday, Brandywine Valley spokesperson Sarah Smith said the dog is a female, about 5 years old and in good health. If its owners are not located, the boaters that found it have expressed interest in adopting it, she said.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
