LOVELAND, Ohio (WXIX) – A Loveland-based non-profit rescue organization asked the community for help finding foster homes for over 30 dogs by the end of Friday.
After years of working with rescue dogs, Paws for Miles volunteer Loren Deters says the number of dogs being taken into shelters daily continues to grow.
“I’ve been doing this for a couple decades, and it feels like one step forwards, 10 steps back,” Deters says.
Deters explains that shelters have limited resources. So, with more dogs come difficult choices.
She says every week shelters put out a list of dogs that will be euthanized because they are out of space and have no other options.
“We are at maximum capacity, and I can speak for most rescues in Cincinnati, they are too at maximum capacity,” Deters explains.
Paws for Miles looks at euthanasia lists weekly and tries to help as many dogs as they can. Deters says last week’s list was more difficult than most with over 30 puppies up for euthanasia.
“It’s a plea to the public, a plea to rescues to pick these up,” Deters says. “They have no choice but to euthanize them.”
When Paws for Miles posted about the 35 puppies up for euthanasia, the community stepped in and found fosters for each puppy.
“I think it’s pulling on our heartstrings a little more because there’s so many puppies this time, and I think that’s why it’s getting more attention this time,” Deters says. “But it happens every Friday.”
Despite this community effort, Paws for Miles is still at capacity. Deters says they need the community to continue saving dogs each week, whether through donations to help provide medical care or giving a dog a second chance through fostering.
“I would just really encourage you to take the step if you thought about it, Deters says. ”We need you. Now is the time to do it.”
