The Lord Baltimore Lions Club learned about diabetes alert dogs at the April 2nd meeting at Mac’s Catering.

Lord Baltimore Lions Club members attended a special program at their April 2 member meeting at Mac’s Catering. The program highlighted a service area of importance as members had the opportunity to learn about the work of diabetes service dogs.

Guest speaker Marilyn Orlin, who suffers from an extreme form of Type 1 diabetes, along with her husband, Mitch, introduced the Lions to Marilyn Orlin’s diabetes service dog, Riley. During her talk, members learned about the lifesaving care and dedication of the highly skilled and sensitive service dog. Orlin demonstrated how Riley will detect a rapid shift in her blood glucose and warn her to increase her insulin to safely address a health crisis. If she is not responsive, Riley will place a paw on Mitch Orlin to alert him.

Through the entire presentation, Riley, a “golden doodle,” maintained a close eye on Marilyn Orlin as she shared information and answered questions from a large gathering of Lions.

Promoting diabetes awareness is one of the major causes of Lions Clubs both in the United States and worldwide, representatives noted.

“The Lord Baltimore Lions are grateful to Marilyn and Lion Mitch for their presentation and for taking the time to answer many thoughtful questions.”

In closing, Lion John Monahan, diabetes chair for the Lions District in Delaware, reminded members of a diabetes initiative presently available and open to school nurses, school staff and interested parents in the schools of Delaware. The project is called Lions Empowering School Nurses for Children with Diabetes. It is a partnership among the Lions Clubs of Delaware, the Delaware Diabetes Coalition and the Delaware Department of Education, School Health Services. It is made available at no cost through a grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
