ELYRIA, Ohio (WOIO) – Lorain County is writing a big check for $1.3 million to expand their dog kennel.
“We’ve worked on this for a few years, and came up with a plan to expand on both sides of the kennel,” said County Commissioner Michelle Hung.
The kennel is at full capacity. The county dog warden says they need help, and fast.
Because, they said putting these dogs down just doesn’t feel like an option.
“I mean we’ve been close, believe me we’ve been close,” said Tim Pihlblad. “Thank God we haven’t. Its been close to 10 years since we’ve put a dog down for space”.
” I see a lot of stray dogs, a lot of loose dogs, a lot of people just not being able to afford dogs,” said volunteer Kelsey Leftwich. “It makes me sad because I can’t bring them all home.”
The expansion will include a lot of upgrades, including 25 new kennels, a quarantine area, a dog washing station and a new dog run.
“I think with all the expansion and renovations it’s gonna be a better place for the dogs that are scared,” said Leftwich.
Right now, adoption fees are only $26 dollars.
If you can’t adopt, Leftwich says turn your attention to your own pets.
“I’d love to see everyone neuter and spay their dogs,” said Leftwich. “ I think that’s the number one cause these dogs are here. They’re unaltered, get loose, and no one comes for them.”
Commissioner David J. Moore says the expansion could be done in six months.
