DENISON, Texas (KXII) – With more animals than space, the Denison Animal Welfare Group is working to find homes for its furry friends.
Denison Animal Welfare Group, or DAWG is completely full, both the pound and shelter. “We only have a limited number of spots and so when we’re full, we’re full,” said DAWG vice president, Bruce Edmaiston.
The shelter does not take animals from the public. DAWG works with animal control to fill the pound located in the back. “We’re a contractor for the city, but we have to follow city rules. All the dogs that come in through there, once they don’t get claimed, they move into the dog adoption,” Edmaiston explained.
Right now, because both are full, anyone who wants to surrender their dog is put on a waiting list, and now there’s a fee associated with surrendering your dog.
To clear up space, DAWG is waiving its adoption fee for medium and large-sized dogs during the month of August. “Any dog that’s been here at least two weeks and is already sterilized, spayed or neutered, it’s free adoption,” said Edmaiston.
Edmaiston stated that adoption rates are half of what they used to be. “Number one, the economy has gotten terrible, the cost of dog food, the cost of bedding, everything has gone sky high, so a lot of people don’t want their animals anymore and they’re trying to surrender them,” he said.
In addition, to this month’s free adoptions, DAWG also offers free dog food. “It’s a small amount, but we subsidize,” said Edmaiston. All you have to do is fill out a form.
If you can’t rescue a dog, you can foster one and the shelter will set you up with everything you need.
