Local animal shelters take in dogs affected by Hurricane Helene

(WBNG) — After Hurricane Helene tore through the southeastern region of the United States, many animals were left without homes.

However, shelters in the Southern Tier are stepping up. Stray Haven in Waverly, NY and the Broome County Humane Society in Binghamton are each receiving nine dogs that were flown in from areas that were affected by the storm.

“This area is very familiar with what flood damage can do,” said Stray Haven Shelter Manager Sarah Hogan. “We’re trying to help out our neighbors in the south as much as we can and take in some displaced dogs and clear out some of their shelters so they can take care of the ones that have homes to go back to.”

The dogs being taken in by Stray Haven will be going into foster care. Those going to the Humane Society will go up for adoption.

While recovery efforts take place in the affected areas, local shelters are ensuring these animals are taken care of in a safe environment.

“So, many people have to put their animals into shelters right now because there’s nowhere else to go with them,” Hogan said. “They’re in shelters themselves. If we can clear the dogs out of the shelters so there are places for their pets to go that they can reclaim them as soon as they get back into their homes.”

The Humane Society held an animal supply drive at the clinic Wednesday morning.

Shelter Manager Amberly Ondrea said the donated supplies will be airlifted to help the animals in need.

“Animals all across the country need help,” Ondrea said. “People who were affected by this hurricane and animals alone have nothing left. There’s no water. There are no supplies. So, things just as a basic roll of paper towels is going to go a long way.”

The Humane Society anticipates more of these drives happening shortly as more supplies are needed. Ondrea encourages residents to make physical donations in potential future drives.

Anyone interested in helping these animals in need can contact Stray Haven or the Broome County Humane Society.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
