AUSTIN, Texas — When a San Marcos woman faced the heartbreaking choice between cancer treatment and keeping her two senior dogs, local animal organizations stepped in with an innovative solution.
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, arrived at San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter in mid-March to surrender her dogs, Farrah and Toby, because she had no one to care for them during her treatment.
Senior Animal Protection Officer Michele connected the woman with Austin Pets Alive!’s Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.) Program, which approved the case for their Hold 4 Home initiative.

The pilot program found a temporary foster in Bulverde, Texas, who agreed to care for Farrah and Toby for several months while their owner focuses on her health.
“Seven out of ten American households have pets, and many view their pets as family members,” said Luis Sanchez, director of public relations for Austin Pets Alive!. “In some cases, participants refused help longer than they would have otherwise because they didn’t have a safe place to take their pet.”
The program aims to keep pets with their families during critical life events, making surrender a last resort rather than the only option for pet owners facing hardships.
Austin Pets Alive! is seeking additional temporary fosters and donations to support the Hold 4 Home initiative.
