Lifeboat Crew Saves ‘Traumatized’ Golden Retriever After Dog Gets Swept Out to Sea After a Walk

A golden retriever in the U.K. narrowly escaped drowning thanks to her owner, a bystander, and a lifeboat rescue crew, who all sprung into action to save the dog.

In a video captured on Feb. 1 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and shared by Storyful, a crew aboard a small vessel pulls up the struggling golden retriever Seren. The dog is paddling alone in deep water with her leash still attached. According to Storyful, Seren ended up far from shore after darting away from her owner and into the waves along Newton Beach in Porthcawl, Wales.

The RNLI told Storyful that Seren, a rescue dog, was “exhausted and was being swept further and further out to sea by the tidal current” when they pulled her from the water.

In the harrowing footage, the crew members lift Seren out of the sea and into a lifeboat before transporting her back to the shore to be reunited with her owner.

“Hello, little girl,” one of the crew members says sweetly to the pup in the clip.

Porthcawl RNLI later shared a post to Facebook revealing that Seren had made it more than 300 meters (900 feet) into the water when the rescue crew pulled her out.

According to the dog’s owners, identified as Andrea and Richard by Talker News, the pair had adopted the 3-year-old golden retriever just five weeks prior.

“I’ve rescued many dogs in my time, but Seren is definitely the most traumatized,” Andrea told the outlet. “She had just been getting comfortable with her regular beach walks.”

Recalling the moment leading up to Seren’s escape, Andrea said that she believes the sound of their car beeping caused her to panic and run away from her new owners.

“On Saturday we were planning to go out with her and had carefully placed her in the car boot when she seemed calm,” she continued. “As we clicked the key to close the car boot, we think the noise must have spooked her because she leaped out immediately, running across the dunes and down onto the beach.”

The pair chased after Seren without luck. Another bystander who was walking their dog attempted to grab the golden retriever to no avail, and Seren made a break for the ocean.

The bystander told Andrea to call the Coast Guard quickly so that they could send a crew to search for the dog.

Porthcawl RNLI’s Chris Missen later told the outlet: “Thankfully, we spotted Seren as soon as we came around Newton Point, and we were able to recover her onboard the lifeboat.”

“She was a little shaken but otherwise unharmed,” Missen added.

In the RNLI’s Facebook post, officials recommended keeping all dogs on a leash if you’re near cliff edges or fast-flowing water and never going in the water after a lost dog. Owners should call officials for assistance instead.

“It was a heart-warming ending for our first rescue of the year,” Missen continued. When it comes to dogs in the water, our safety advice is to never enter the water after your dog, as you could end up in difficulty yourself.”
