LFR honors firefighter recruits, rescue dogs with badge ceremony

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Nearly a dozen new firefighters will soon be hitting the streets of the Capital city after receiving their badges with Lincoln Fire & Rescue on Tuesday.

A ceremony at LFR’s reception hall honored the 11 recruits, with city officials ringing in the occasion and swearing them in to the department.

One of the new firefighters, Grant Gordon, spoke about the intense few months of learning the ropes since last August.

Training included learning fire suppression methods, practicing technical rescues and studying basic emergency medical services, all in a matter of 18 weeks.

For their final task, recruits put their skills to the test with live burns.

“It was long days and a lot of information being thrown at us,” Gordon said. “Being able to put it all together and see it come to fruition was definitely the best part.”

Born and raised in Lincoln by a volunteer firefighter father, Gordon said he always kept the job in mind for himself.

“Just being able to be one of those guys that I’ve looked up to my whole life has definitely played a big role in getting me here today,” he said.

Another recruit sworn in on Tuesday was Ethan Morrow, son of Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow, who pinned the LFR badge to his uniform.

Also getting some hardware were three rescue dogs and their LFR handlers, who completed certifications last year to work as members of Nebraska Task Force 1.

The dogs will help search for victims during disaster situations where people are potentially trapped under rubble.
