LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) -Saturday morning, the annual Mutt Strut was filled with pups and owners to show support for the Lexington Humane Society.
From a 5k, one-and-a-half mile dog-friendly walk and vendors, the event raised funds for the humane society to be able to heal the injured and find homes for the homeless.
“We have over 450 animals in our care so things like this help us fundraise and allow us to keep doing the life-saving work we do,” Lexington Humane Society’s Meghan Hawkins said.
After 15 years of fundraising during the Mutt Strutt, Hawkins said some people visit year after year to help them raise money to care for the thousands of animals they receive every year.
“We’ve seen such a great response from people from people that have actually adopted from us,” she said. “We love seeing those dogs come back out, the alumni, and see how they are doing.”
One of the alumni dogs there was Lulu, who was the star of the show with her ‘smooch a pooch’ booth that raised funds for her fellow furry friends.
Lulu was surrendered to the Lexington Humane Society earlier this year and due to neglect from her previous owner, her leg had to be amputated.
Now she is adopted and is one of the “ambassadogs” for the humane society.
“She’s bringing a lot of attention to shelter dogs, especially those with different needs,” Lulu’s owner Lori Tincher said.
Tincher said many like Lulu still need to be adopted so events like these help get the word out.
