TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Sydney, Bud, and Zeke have graduated from the Terre Haute Humane Society’s “Leash on Life” program, but are having a hard time finding a forever home.

The program is an effort between the Terre Haute Humane Society and the Terre Haute Federal Penitentiary. It is designed to allow dogs to live with and be trained by incarcerated individuals with a trainer from “Unlimited Pawsabilities”. The dogs have learned basic commands like sit, lay down, heel, and even learn how to interact with other dogs.

When the dog is adopted, the adopter and the dog will go through the training course at “Unlimited Pawsabilities”. This is to help the adopter learn the commands that the dog already knows. The dog can then take the K-9 Good Citizenship test.
Volunteer Coordinator Maggie Wheeler said there will be some work on the adopter’s end to maintain the dogs’ training.

“It’s a lot of benefits. There’s a little bit of work, but I mean everything in life that’s worth anything involves just a little bit of work,” she said.
For those who wish to adopt these dogs can email Maggie at volunteer@thhs.org or call the shelter at (812) 232-0293.
