Laughter at dog’s reaction to being told grandma’s arrived: “The side eye”

A video of a golden retriever’s reaction to his owner saying she is “telling grandma” about his naughty behavior has left the internet in stitches.

The clip was posted by @bennythegoldennn and has garnered 632,000 views since it was shared on November 18. The footage shows the pup standing against the arm of a chair, pushing his head against the woman. The dog appears to freeze upon hearing the woman say “I’m gonna tell grandma,” before carrying on pushing against her.

The woman says “she’s here” and the dog remains still, staring at the woman as a note across the clip reads: “I swear to frig if you tell her.”

“Grandma…you’re gonna go discipline Benny?” the woman asks, as the pup drops down onto the floor and stares at the doorway. “She’s gonna get you in trouble,” the owner says as the dog watches the doorway before lunging towards a slipper on the floor and chewing on it.

“Hey, Benny,” the woman says as the dog appears to give the owner a side eye, remaining still with his mouth biting the slipper. The owner later grabs a doll toy from the floor, saying: “I’m gonna take snuggle pup.” Benny then jumps up towards the woman as a note overlaid on the video reads: “Give him back” before the clip ends.

A caption shared with the post reads: “Threatening grandma is my only back bone.”

Benny’s defiant behavior comes as no surprise as dogs “are not sensitive to watching-eyes,” according to a January 2020 study published in Scientific Reports.

The study found that dogs do understand social rules, but are less sensitive to watching eyes than humans. According to the study, while humans tend to modify their behavior when they feel they’re being observed, dogs do not show the same “watching-eye effect,” so they’re unlikely to change their behavior because someone is watching.

The study also noted that dogs are slower to break rules when given direct commands, but this doesn’t apply to new people observing the dog.

“For example, dogs are more likely to steal forbidden food when a novel observer replaces the person giving the command,” the study said.
