LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The temperatures outside in Southern Nevada are nowhere near safe for anyone to be in.
Sometimes those without a home have no choice but to be in these sweltering conditions.
FOX5 found a valley man who opened up his business and heart to anyone needing relief from the heat. The Bruce Solutions Center is located by Bruce and Fremont, which is an area that is typically underserved.
However, owner Keith Courtney wanted to change that and opened his center to focus on community recourses. This week he opened his doors for anyone needing an escape.
Courtney put up a sign outside his facility that says “Free Water.”
“In the neighborhood we are in we are seeing a lot of people drop like flies because of the fentanyl and the heat,” Courtney said.
That sign outside has now made a huge difference in the community who have walked into the facility to escape the heat.
“We get a lot of water donations so that is great just trying to keep the town hydrated during this heat wave,” Courtney said.
Courtney bought the building a year ago and offers medical, mental health, and other community recourses by teaming up with health care workers.
“We want to make sure especially in this heat people have a place to come just a little bit of refuge that we are meeting a basic need,” patient advocate Monique Lumpkin said.
That need is now being met with water and a free meal.
“We do this on a daily basis that’s why donations are welcome because this is all free to the community,” Darnell Jernigan, who is a partner with the center said.
Jernigan cooks up to 100 hot dogs a day for those who walk through their doors and listens to their needs.
“Most of all just listen to the community and understanding their needs , their needs are different their problems are different,” he said.
It is an example of how a simple gesture can go a long way.
Since putting up the sign, Courtney said they have gotten hundreds of people walking through their doors. Since the water and other items are donated or bought themselves, they are always looking for help.
If you would like to donate any water or food items you can drop them off at the center located at 222 S. Bruce Street anytime Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
