A Chemung County-based organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs that are at risk of euthanasia for medical issues or behavior problems is gearing up for its biggest annual fundraiser this weekend.
The Kramer Foundation, founded by retired Chemung County sheriff’s deputy and K-9 handler Juli Lathrop, has rescued well over 1,000 “unadoptable” dogs since its inception more than 20 years ago.
The Kramer Foundation offers a variety of services to the public, all strictly voluntary and at no cost to participants. Instead, the foundation relies on fundraisers and corporate donations to cover expenses.
The organization’s major fundraiser will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall, 71 Old Ithaca Road in Horseheads.
The $10 admission fee will help the foundation cover operating expenses, said board Vice President Garry Cantliffe.
“The amount raised goes to keeping the lights on, vet bills and everything else,” Cantliffe said. “It goes for kennels, propane, dog food, medications. There is no goal, just sustainment to keep the lights on and the dogs fed.”
The fundraiser will feature, among other things, a chicken and biscuit dinner, bake sale, disc jockey Miller Time and live band One Tough Crowd Lite, glitter tattoos, face painting and more than 60 raffle baskets, among other things.

There will also be therapy dogs on hand during the event.
People who are unable to attend the fundraiser can also donate to the Kramer Foundation directly.
