High School
In high school volleyball tournament district semifinals last night…
- In Division Two, Houghton’s season ended with a 3-1 (16-25, 23-25, 26-24, 16-25) loss to Kingsford. Laney Johnson had 19 assists, and reached the 2,000 mark for her career. She also had 5 kills, 2 aces, 16 digs and 1 block. Eva Gerard had 9 kills and 3 aces; and Emmy Pietila 1 ace and 21 digs. The Flivvers will face Escanaba for the district title tonight.
- In Division Three, Calumet advanced with an easy 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-16) victory over Ishpeming. Allie Bjorn had 15 kills and 1 ace; Sienna Anderson 4 kills and 1 ace; Jackie Kiilunen 13 kills, 4 aces, 13 digs; Chloe Coppo 6 aces including a 16-point run in set two; Jess Anderson 12 digs; and Bella Coppo 25 assists. Jeffers fell to Ironwood 3-2. The Copper Kings will host the Red Devils for the district title tomorrow at 6, with coverage beginning at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
- In Division Four, District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell dispatched Baraga 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-10). For the Lakes, Cleo Milkey had 17 kills and 6 aces; Alli Corrigan 9 kills and 8 digs; and Payton Goldsworthy 26 assists and 3 blocks. Hancock blanked L’Anse 3-0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-8). The Bulldogs will host the Lakes in the championship game tomorrow at 6.
- In Division Four, District 97 at Ewen-Trout Creek, Wakefield-Marenisco swept Watersmeet 3-0, and the host Panthers blanked Ontonagon 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-17). That title game will be played tonight at 7 at Ewen-Trout Creek High School.
A number of local football players have been honored on the Great Lakes 8 West Division All-Conference team.
- From Lake Linden-Hubbell, running back Nate St. Onge was named to the first team, and Alex Drew was placed on the first team as an offensive lineman, and the second team as a defensive lineman. Receiver Tyler Axford also made the second team.
- From Ontonagon, quarterback Austin Gordon made the first team, and Caden Besonen was honored as both a receiver and a defensive back. Receiver Brody Bobula made the second team.
- Lane Gorzinski from North Central was named Player of the Year, Nikolas Stephens from Forest Park Defensive Player of the Year, and North Central’s Leo Gorzinski Coach of the Year.

College Soccer
The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Saginaw Valley State this afternoon.
The Northern Michigan women’s team visits Grand Valley State.
NHL
The Red Wings breezed past the Blackhawks 4-1 last night. Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Larkin each had a goal and an assist. Joe Veleno and Andrew Copp also found the net. Cam Talbot made 28 saves.
The Wings play at Toronto tomorrow. Coverage will start at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
Brandon Miller’s lay-in at the buzzer gave the Hornets a 108-107 victory over the Pistons last night. Jaden Ivey scored 21 for Detroit, and Cade Cunningham had a triple-double with 20 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Jalen Duren left the game after rolling an ankle. He’ll be evaluated today.
The Pistons welcome the Hawks tomorrow.
NFL
