Kernersville man charged with animal cruelty after leaving dogs in car overnight, deputies say

A man is facing animal cruelty charges after two dogs died, according to deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.On Saturday, deputies said they were approached about dogs in distress inside a locked vehicle. When deputies arrived at the vehicle, which was located near the intersection of East 2nd Street and North Church Street, three dogs were seen inside the vehicle.Officials said they made emergency entry into the vehicle by breaking a window. Personnel with the Winston-Salem Fire Department responded and began providing treatment to three dogs in an attempt to save time, but two of the dogs died.Deputies said the third dog was taken to a local emergency veterinary clinic for evaluation and is expected to recover.The initial investigation revealed that the dogs had been left inside the vehicle overnight with the windows rolled up. Officials said the person responsible for the car, Darin James, 23, said he checked up on the dogs earlier that morning and said the dogs looked fine.Deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Division began investigating. Officials said James was charged with three counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
