Amid recent high temperatures, the dogs at Sonoma Family Dog Rescue have been beating the heat, thanks to the donations of ice and coolers by volunteers.
“When it gets really warm, and for us 85 degrees or more is warm, that’s very uncomfortable for people, but also for the dogs,” said Ilsa Jule, VP of Operations at Family Dog Rescue.
Jule says that shelter volunteers, as well as other members of the community, regularly bring in bags of ice to stock the 14 kiddie pools used too cool down dogs in their enrichment yards outdoors when high temperatures are forecast.
“People will literally go to Safeway and buy like a couple hundred pounds of ice,” Jule said. “The ice donations have always been welcome.”
Temperatures pushed into the high nineties last week across the North Bay, with temperatures expected to rise again in the middle of this week following a brief respite.
However, the kennel, which cares for approximately 45 dogs in-shelter and oversees an additional 35 dogs in foster homes, may not need to rely on volunteers for ice in the near future. A donor recently gave the shelter an ice maker, which Jule hopes will be operational by the week of July 14.
