BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — As temperatures climb across Louisiana, local animal experts are urging pet owners to take precautions to protect their furry companions from extreme heat.
Animal shelters like Companion Animal Alliance in Baton Rouge are seeing an increase in heat-related concerns as summer sets in. Jen Hollas, a representative with the organization, says some of the biggest risks include dehydration and heatstroke, which can escalate quickly.
“Dehydration is one of the biggest risks that dogs have, as well as heatstroke,” Hollas said. “There are a couple of signs you can look for — excessive panting, a rapid heartbeat, lethargy, or if the dog is just really weak.”
Local pet owner Kathleen Hixson is already adjusting her daily routine to keep her dog safe.
“Usually we’ll go for walks in the morning when it’s a little cooler outside,” Hixson said. “And we always keep some water on us, especially if it’s going to be a longer walk.”
Avoiding outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day — typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. — is essential, according to Hollas. Pavement can also pose a danger.
“You always want to make sure the pavement is not too hot. You can check that by placing the back of your hand on it,” Hollas explained. “If your hand is burning, that means their paw pads will burn too.”
Another serious threat: leaving pets in parked vehicles. Even on a moderately warm day, the interior of a car can become dangerously hot in minutes.
“A parked car can rise about 40 degrees hotter than the outside temperature, and that happens very quickly,” Hollas warned.
To help pets stay cool, experts recommend using fans, cooling mats, and providing plenty of fresh water. Frozen treats made for pets can also offer relief.
And if your pet shows signs of overheating?
“The best thing to do is to call your veterinarian immediately,” Hollas said. “They are going to have the best advice for your specific situation.”
By taking a few extra precautions, pet owners can ensure a safer, more comfortable summer for their animals.
