PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – Record-breaking heat is forcing may people indoors where they have everything they need to stay hydrated and entertained.
The same, however, cannot be said for dogs, which look forward to going outside.
“I mostly keep him inside and keep him hydrated, but like anyone else he gets bored, so I bring him to the dog park.,” said dog owner, Joyce Broome, “I have to come at 6 or 7 in the morning when its cool.”
When temperatures exceed 95 degrees, dogs should only be allowed outside for about 15 to 20 minutes. authorities said. After that, they may begin to show signs of heat stroke.
“Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, excessive drooling, red gums, (increased) heartrate, restless behavior, having difficulty maintaining their balance,” said Elisa Dykes, Laurel-Jones County Animal Rescue League vice president.
If a pet is displaying any of these symptoms, authorities said to move the animal to a shaded area and provide water that is at room temperature. Ice water can cool the dog’s body too quickly.
Once the dog has cooled down, take them to a veterinarian.
Dykes said one of the worst culprits in the the battle against heat is dealing the concrete.
Literally.
“Concrete can reach 120 degrees within five minutes,” Dykes said. “Asphalt reaches 140 degrees within 10 minutes.”
Experts say dog owners should be following the 7-second rule: If the back of the hand can’t be held to the pavement for more than 7 seconds, it is probably too hot for a dog’s paws.
“They make paw pad medicine that you can buy over the counter,” Dykes said. “I just advise not to even get them on concrete.
“They do make boots that you can put on your dogs. Some dogs like it, some dogs don’t.”
If a dog must stay outside, the Rescue League recommends making sure they have a shaded area or doghouse, plenty of water and a kiddie pool.
