The holidays are here, and while the season is full of joy and celebration, it can also present hidden dangers for pets. The Eugene-based Greenhill Humane Society is sharing some essential tips to keep your furry friends safe and happy during the festivities.
“We love including our pets in our fun holiday festivities, but remember to keep your pets safe and comfortable,” said Kelly Fleischmann, Greenhill’s community engagement manager.
Holiday tips for pets
1. Secure your Christmas tree
A wobbly tree can tip over, potentially injuring your pet or spilling water containing harmful fertilizers. Anchor your tree securely to keep it—and your pets—safe.
2. Know which holiday plants are toxic
Holiday favorites like holly, mistletoe, and lilies can cause severe health issues for pets, from nausea to kidney failure. Opt for pet-safe alternatives like silk or plastic decorations.
3. Skip the tinsel
Tinsel may look like a fun toy to cats, but if swallowed, it can obstruct their digestive tract, leading to dangerous health problems and possible surgery.
4. Keep lit candles out of reach
Pets can burn themselves or even cause a fire by knocking over candles. Always supervise lit flames or use flameless candles for a safer option.
5. Hide wires, batteries and breakables
Wires can deliver lethal shocks, punctured batteries can cause burns, and shattered ornaments can harm your pet’s mouth and digestive system. Keep these items out of paws’ reach.
6. Watch the sweets and drinks
Holiday treats like chocolate, raisins, and onions are toxic to pets. Be mindful of unattended plates, beverages, and garbage to prevent accidental snacking.
7. Treat your pets to holiday cheer
Give your pets their own festive fun with safe toys, like chewables, Kongs filled with healthy snacks, or catnip-filled gifts.
8. Store medications safely
If you’re hosting guests, ensure all medications are zipped up and out of reach to avoid curious pets ingesting something harmful.
9. New Year’s Eve safety
Strings of confetti and noisy poppers can harm pets or frighten them. Keep pets secured in a safe, quiet area during fireworks and midnight celebrations.
