19 dogs were surrendered to the Kent County Animal Shelter, or KCAS, after being removed from their previous owner in October.
KCAS is now preparing these dogs for adoption, though their availability depends on necessary veterinarian evaluations and care.
On Oct. 14, authorities responded to a call about a red Chevy Silverado parked at a Dollar Tree in Walker. The owner was found living in the vehicle with 17 dogs in poor conditions.
The dogs were taken to KCAS for care. Since arriving, one of the dogs has given birth to two puppies, making the total number of rescued dogs 19.
The owner pleaded not guilty to a charge of animal abuse, surrendered the dogs, and had her bond lowered, officials said. She faces up to four years in prison, a $5,000 fine, and 500 hours of community service.
“Many of the dogs have friendly dispositions and, once cleared, are likely to be adopted quickly,” said Angela Hollinshead, KCAS director.
KCAS now cares for 94 dogs. 30 have already been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, microchipped, and are ready for adoption.
From now until Dec. 1, KCAS is offering a special adoption fee of just $50. The fee includes:
- A QR smart Kent County Dog License
- An extra month of prescription flea/tick preventative
- Heartworm preventative
