JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) — The Joplin Health Department is reminding pet owners about water safety when it comes to our four-legged friends.
The City of Joplin Health Department Facebook page is sharing some tips:
- Not all dogs are good swimmers
- Don’t assume they already know how to swim, they have to learn too!
- Preserve a life
- Life vests safe lives! When boating, life vests make your pet visible, and also give you something to grab, should they jump or fall into the water.
- Curiosity can kill
- Pets can fall into pools. Teach your pet how to get in and out of pools by themselves. Fences or safety nets can help.
Don’t force them into the water
- Never force a pet into water. It won’t be an enjoyable experience for you or your pet.
During an emergency with a pet, owners can call the Joplin Health Department or the Joplin Police Department’s non-emergency number at 417-623-3131.
