After an eyebrow-raising year-long hiatus from competing in the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, Joey Chestnut has announced his (likely triumphant) return. Every year on the Fourth of July, the famous hot dog brand hosts a hot dog-eating fete. As a 16-time champion, it was a shock when last year, the top contender had to miss out on the event due to his sponsorship with Impossible Foods, a brand touting plant-based hot dog and other meat alternatives.
In a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, Chestnut wrote, “I’m thrilled to be returning to the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. This event means the world to me. It’s a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life.”
The champion went on to explain that he would continue to partner with other companies, but made it clear that Nathan’s is the only hot dog company he has ever worked with.
“I respect that there were differences in interpretation, but I’m grateful we’ve been able to find common ground. I’m excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do, and celebrating the Fourth of July with hot dogs in my hands!” he continued.
Last year’s winner, Patrick Bertoletti, scarfed down a whopping 58 hot dogs in the 10-minute timed contest. However, that pales in comparison to Chestnut’s contest record, which he set in 2021 by consuming 76 hot dogs. That means the former champ will have to eat a gobsmacking 77 hot dogs to beat his previous record at this year’s Fourth of July contest.
Ladies and gentleman… can he do it? With last year’s hiatus, I have a good feeling that he’ll step up to the challenge.
