Internet applauds guilty dog’s heroic attempt to conceal “the evidence”

The hilarious moment a dog tried—and failed—to conceal its guilt after chewing a pair of pink fairy wings has left the internet in stitches.

Halloween may be over, but it appears that one dog just can’t get enough of spooky season, particularly the fancy dress costumes. TikTok user Alyssa Parenteau shared a clip online (@alyssaparenteau6) of the moment she found her pink fairy wings on the couch, but they’d been modified with a rather large chunk taken out of them.

In the video, Parenteau looked over at her dog perched beside the chewed Halloween accessory and asked, “who was it?” While trying to feign ignorance and hide all guilt, there was no concealing the pink fluff that was clearly hanging out of the dog’s mouth.

The dog tried its best to swallow it up and hide the pink fluff, but it didn’t seem to work out as planned. The valiant attempt to plead innocence has left the internet in hysterics, leading to more than 1.5 million views and over 184,400 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.

Newsweek has contacted @alyssaparenteau6 via TikTok for comment.

Alongside the video, Parenteau joked that she “can’t have anything nice” with her fiendish pooch around.

In many cases, owners might notice something is wrong before they even see what carnage their guilty dog has caused. This is because the dog’s body posture and attitude are usually strong indicators of their misbehavior.

They might put their head down, avert their eyes, hunch their shoulders or retreat somewhere else entirely. Many owners interpret these submissive and appeasement signals as signs of guilt, but actually, they’re used to prevent physical conflict. When humans notice these signals, they’re likely to feel compassion and misinterpret them for remorse, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.

Researchers remain unclear as to whether or not dogs are capable of feeling guilt, but it is nonetheless possible for dogs to learn the rules of their household and know when they’ve crossed them. VCA Animal Hospitals explains that consistent communication and reward-based training can reduce undesirable behavior.

How Did TikTok React?

Parenteau may think she caught the culprit red-handed, but plenty of TikTok users instantly came to the dog’s defense and insisted it was someone else. With over 440 comments on the viral TikTok post so far, many people encouraged Parenteau to keep her options open as it remains a mystery.

One comment reads: “Might have to bring in a detective.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “Definitely an intruder! Not that sweet pupper. Totally innocent.”

“I guess we’ll never know,” joked one commenter.

While another person defending the dog added: “They’re just analyzing the evidence.”
