FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) — Three dogs are safe thanks to a group of Fort Wayne police officers who rescued them from a massive fire that had spread into their kennels.
According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, police were called to a home in the 3700 block of South Hanna Street just after midnight Wednesday to investigate a structure fire.
There, officers saw a detached garage completely in flames and spreading to surrounding buildings. They quickly began to evacuate nearby homes, and while doing so, they noticed a dog trapped inside a kennel, surrounded by fire.
Bodycam footage shows two officers rushing to the kennel to pry open the gate and release the dog. Another officer is heard calling for the dog to take get it as far away from the fire as possible.
The second kennel was much more difficult to open. Another officer is seen jumping a chain link fence to run back to their car and grab bolt cutters.
Officers worked quick to cut apart the side of the fence and coax the dogs out. They had to pull two pit bulls out of an igloo kennel stuck in a corner before one cop eventually picked up one dog it and carried it away from the fire.
As officers run with the dogs back toward the street, the dogs’ owner is seen exiting their house. Police urge them to evacuate and also ask how many dogs they have. The owner confirms they have three, meaning each dog was rescued and accounted for.
It’s not clear what started the fire or if anyone else, whether human or animal, was hurt.
Below are the bodycam videos from Wednesday’s dog rescue.
