ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The day before the Su Dog 300 sled dog race, the organization announced via social media it is canceling its inaugural event, which was scheduled for Saturday.
“We have 300 miles of trail that is solid and holding up, but the negativity we’ve received from both the mushers and non-mushers of our community has disheartened us,” the organization said on its official Facebook page. “The Su Dog 300 has been a community-focused initiative since it’s inception in late 2023 – and if the community doesn’t want the race, then we will cancel the race.”
In the post, the organization said it plans to have the race next year.
Scheduled for a January 25 start in Willow, the Su Dog 300 was the newest Iditarod qualifier in the sport of mushing, set to pull the hook on its first race this year.
“The Su Dog 300 is focused on creating a fun and educational event for dogs, dog mushers, and fans alike to experience the beauty of this area and the magic of sled dogs in their element,” their website states.
The race already adapted to the lack of snow and warm temperatures previously. It changed the route that was set to cross the Susitna River to mainly covering ground in the Willow and Caswell areas.
