LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The Rashidi family, East African immigrants from Malawi, moved to their new home in the Algonquin neighborhood just three weeks ago.
Monday evening, two dogs entered their backyard and attacked an 8-year-old girl and her 22-year-old brother.
Family members said Alinoth Rashidi was trying to lure the dogs away from his sister. He fell and the dogs pounced on him.
“He saw my sister run, and he went to the backyard and then the dog start coming to my brother,” 13-year-old sister Sita Rashidi said. “And then my brother fell and the dogs started eating my brother.”
On Tuesday, the Rashidis showed reporters the spot on the side of their house where Alinoth had to fight for his life. His young sister escaped with multiple bites. But he was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Neighbors said chaos followed as police chased down and shot the dogs.
“He was barking, his mouth bleeding. Just crazy,” said one neighbor who did not want to be identified.
“It was just a trail of blood,” she said. “Every time that dog moved, his tongue was dripping blood. It was devastating, frightening.”
The owner was located according to LMPD. An investigation is underway by Louisville Metro Animal Services.
Meanwhile, the shirt Alinoth Rashidi wore in the attack still lies on the spot where it happened, shredded and stained with blood, as a family of immigrants tries to come to grips with the horror they have had to experience in their new home.
