The Illinois State University Police Department (ISUPD) is excited to announce the addition of its newest and furriest team member, Pawfficer Korg. Joining ISUPD’s Community Engagement Unit, Korg is a trained therapy dog dedicated to providing comfort and unconditional support to students, faculty, and staff. He will officially arrive to campus on March 21.
Pawfficer Korg was trained by SIT Service Dogs, an organization based in Ava, Illinois, that specializes in preparing service and therapy dogs for public service. Each dog completes over 1,250 hours of certified training before placement. Unlike traditional police K9s trained for detection or apprehension, Korg’s role is focused solely on well-being and support. He follows in the pawprints of Pawfficer Sage, who served as ISUPD’s first therapy dog from 2019 to 2024 and was also trained by SIT Service Dogs.
“The Pawfficer Program at ISU has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Lex Dietz, Program Director at SIT Service Dogs. “It has fostered a stronger sense of community and has shown the deep value that therapy dogs bring to both the police department and the wider university. We are incredibly proud to see the legacy of Sage continue, and we look forward to seeing the new Pawfficer, Korg, continue the mission of comfort, healing, and support.”
Pawfficer Korg will live at the Illinois State University Police Department, where he will have a designated space with several cozy beds, round-the-clock care from officers, and an unlimited supply of tennis balls. When he’s not out spreading joy across campus, Korg will spend time bonding with officers, going on walks around ISU, and continuing his training to ensure he’s always ready to provide comfort when it’s needed most.
“We’ve seen firsthand the incredible impact a therapy dog can have on our campus community.
Pawfficer Korg will be a source of comfort during stressful times, a friendly face for students, and a bridge that strengthens the connection between ISUPD and those we serve.”Chief Aaron Woodruff
To celebrate Pawfficer Korg’s arrival, ISUPD will host a special welcome event on April 11 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Spotlight Room of the Bone Student Center. The event is open to the public and will provide an opportunity to meet Korg, learn more about his role, and enjoy a moment of positivity.
