The Fairbanks Ice Dogs recorded 36 shots compared to 22 for the Springfield Jr. Blues in their Friday night matchup. That volume, while slow to lead to a score, proved crucial to the Ice Dogs earning a 4-2 win given that Springfield had a similar conversion rate of shots on goal (better in fact before an empty-net goal for Fairbanks in the final minute).
“It’s something that we talked about again in the team meeting yesterday was we should never get outshot with the way that we can play, and the ability and the talent that we have on this team,” Ice Dogs head coach Ryan Theros said postgame. “That was kind of a goal after the first period was keeping them under 20 (shots) if we can, and [we] did a really good job of taking care of the defensive zone.”
