PARAGOULD, Ark. (KAIT) – Greene County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Paragould woman after they reported finding a dead dog in an “advanced decomposition stage” in her home.
Greene County District Judge Daniel Stidham found probable cause Thursday, May 1, to charge 31-year-old Barbara Wright with aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat, or equine, a Class D felony.
On April 29, deputies responded to an animal abuse call at a home on Greene County Road 947.
According to the court documents, a witness reported going to the home to repair the flooring when he found a deceased dog in one of the bedrooms.
Another witness reportedly told deputies Wright had been living in the home with her boyfriend until he left her.
“She stated that about a month ago she was inside the home speaking with Barbara Wright after her boyfriend had moved,” Detective Rhonda R. Thomas stated in the affidavit. “She stated at that time the dog was in the bedroom and alive.”
The woman also claimed that Wright kept yelling at the dog, telling it to “shut up” and “I hope you die, stupid dog.”
The witness claimed Wright’s boyfriend had bought the dog for her several months before their breakup.
After speaking with multiple witnesses on the scene, who “gave details about several other dogs that had died at the residence while Barbara Wright lived there,” investigators obtained a search warrant, the affidavit said.
“A large deceased dog was located in the bedroom of the home,” Thomas stated. “The dog appeared to have been deceased for some time and was already at an advanced decomposition stage.”
Wright was arrested and booked into the Greene County Detention Center.
She is currently free on a $10,000 cash-only bond, awaiting an appearance in circuit court.
